mother's day began
as a day for the grieved

for the mothers who mothered
and the ones bereaved

for honoring mothers 
with what earth births

mothers who
left mother earth

roses, soil
ocean, sky

memories of mother
with the mind's eye

cardinals, doves
now they fly

mother's day began
because she died
for us to keep
her memory alive
